As a mother of three school aged children, we moved to Calvert County for the amazing public school system. Like many parents during COVID however, we became deeply concerned about our children's educational experience. It became evident that legislation, and who we vote for, dictate our children's education significantly. Upon learning these things I felt a strong conviction that something should be done to improve our school system, which is why I am running for the Calvert County Board of Education.
During COVID school closures, I created/ran a Facebook group for CCPS parents with the goal of raising awareness and taking action to re-open schools. This group gave a voice to those who felt like they weren't being heard. Staff, students and community members began looking to me to be their trusted advocate when our county was facing a number of challenges - learning loss, masks in schools, virtual learning, classroom violence and more. Through these efforts a national organization, Power2Parent, recruited me to be the State Director of the Maryland chapter. In my role as State Director I was able to help to educate families on becoming more effective advocates through legislative process presentations, parent advocacy trainings, and family life and human sexuality educational seminars.
Over the last several years I have met with many CCPS families, teachers, staff, administrators, County Commissioners, and Maryland Legislators. I've spoken at numerous Calvert County Board of Education meetings on topics such as school safety and student discipline, the reduction of programs and necessary supports for students and teachers, the CCPS budget, the Blueprint for Maryland's Future, curriculum, and more. I have organized rallies at the Board of Education, helped to organize and support the bus drivers during their protest, and continue to educate families on how to better support the educational process.
I served as the Maryland State Director for Power2Parent Union Maryland until deciding to run for the Calvert County Board of Education. I am proud to have been appointed by the Calvert County Board of County Commissions to serve on the Calvert County Blueprint Committee as as Citizen Representative. Now, my hope is to serve the citizens of Calvert County on the Board of Education.
If elected, I will ensure Calvert County Public Schools remain focused on Excellence in Education, guaranteeing that each dollar we receive is being spent on the highest quality educational content and programs for every student at every level and learning ability. I want to create policies that enhance mutual respect between our staff, students, and families. We need to prioritize an environment of safety so once again learning can be the focus thereby ensuring staff will be supported by all stakeholders. Individual student achievement needs to be the focus of every decision and critical thinking to be at the forefront of the CCPS educational process.
